Orange Center Elementary STEM Program will abide by Orange County Public Schools’ attendance/absence policy.

Regular attendance is a very important factor in a child’s success at school and is also required by Florida Law. Each parent and guardian of a child within compulsory attendance age is responsible for the child’s school attendance. The parent should encourage the child to be in school and on time each day.

Tardies: Excessive tardiness is not acceptable. Students that arrive at school tardy will be given a tardy slip to gain entrance into class. We will also provide tardy students with a cold breakfast (cereal, cereal bar, milk, fruit, and applesauce) until 8:30 a.m. Students that arrive tardy 5 times in a row will receive 1 unexcused absence.

Students who are absent from school for any reason are responsible for all assigned work when a pupil returns to school from an absence. The student will be allowed a period of time equal to the number of days absent plus one (up to 10 days) to complete missed work. Failure to complete this work within an allotted time will result in a zero. Such assignments should apply to the objectives of the missed instruction.

Students who are suspended from school are entitled to make up missed work within the time limit established by district policy. The student or parent/guardian must make take the initiative to contact teachers to request make-up work. Teachers shall supply all make-up material.

In order for a tardy or absence to be excused, students must present a letter stating the illness as the reason for absence, a written excuse from a physician, dentist, or other recognized medical practitioner.

When a student is absent, he or she misses the opportunity to engage in activities and benefit from the verbal communication/interaction within the classroom. Students will be able, through writing assignments, to make up that portion of the course for which written assignments are applicable. Make-up work will be designed to help the student return to regular school attendance and to return to normal school participation.

If it should be necessary for a child to be absent for 3 or more days, parents may request homework assignments by calling the office or school secretary.

A STUDENT MUST BE PRESENT FOR AT LEAST HALF A DAY TO BE COUNTED PRESENT FOR THE DAY. Each student will begin the school year with zero absences.

On a daily basis, student absences will be recorded as unexcused. Parents must send in the excused absence form stating the reason for the absence with the child when he/she returns to school. The note must be submitted within 24 hours after the child returns to school. Upon returning to school, the child must report to the office between 7:00 -8:00 a.m. to be issued an admit slip. Absences may be excused for the following reasons:

(a) illness, injury or other insurmountable condition;

(b) illness or death of a member of the student’s immediate family;

(c) recognized (or established) religious holidays and/or religious instruction;

(d) medical appointments;

(e) participation in an approved activity or class of instruction held at another site;

(f) prearranged absences of educational value with the principal’s prior approval;

(g) Pediculosis (head lice) infestation (up to four (4) days per school year); or

(h) Catastrophic disasters that significantly impact the life of the student (e.g. loss of residence from natural disaster).

Concerns outside of attendance will be reported the school’s child study team to determine if early patterns of truancy are developing, whether the absences are excused or not. A meeting with the parent will be scheduled to identify potential remedies.

The OCPS policy states that the superintendent may file a petition to truancy court if the following occurs: 5 unexcused absences within a calendar month, 10 unexcused absences within a 90 calendar day period, or 15 unexcused absences within 90 calendar days.
